The Food Shelf provides a week's supply of groceries and a voucher to a local grocery store for perishable food.  We also often connect people to other resources to meet their needs.

Our service area covers the population within Independent School District 200.

A food shelf appointment involves more than food assistance. The family’s financial situation is discussed which often uncovers other issues.  Understanding the strain people feel during financially challenging times is a very real part of the process.        

Over 3/4 of the food distributed through the food shelf comes from the generous contributions of local churches, civic organizations, and individuals. 

HFS also purchases a great deal of food through Second Harvest Heartland Food Bank and from our local grocers.  Monetary donations are welcome to assist our purchases.

An emergency bag of personal/household items are common requests. 

Gas vouchers for those working or needing to get to school or medical appointments, as well as diapers, formula, and dairy vouchers are also common needs.
